The University of Sudbury overlooks the Ramsey and Nepahwin lakes on land adjacent to the campus of Laurentian University with which it is federated. It is an undergraduate liberal arts Catholic university committed to bilingualism and the heritage of Canada’s First Nations. Important research areas are Franco-Ontarian folklore and ethnology, Native studies, philosophy, and religious studies.
Founded as Collège du Sacré-Coeur in 1913, it was the first, and for many years the only, institution of higher learning in Northern Ontario. In 1957, it changed its name and began to exercise its full teaching and degree-granting powers. It entered into the Laurentian federation as a founding member in 1960.
It is a founding member of the Laurentian Federation, it inspires students to become thoughtful and engaged citizens with strong leadership skills within its bilingual and tri-cultural environment.
